The Hunt

In 2007 I joined members of the nomadic Hadzabe tribe of northern Tanzania on a hunt. Today I dug up this image, which I had never processed. I liked the way it turned out in black and white after toying with Silver Efex Pro.

The layout of the hunters meant a vertical crop would work well too, but I wanted to keep it wide to capture more of the moody landscape.

Canon 20D
Canon 10-22mm
ISO 800

f/4.5

Nice find in those out takes. Great choice for B&W.

This might need a little more attention as you mentioned about crop. A little off each side and square might achieve what you are looking for. :toast:

"In 2007 I joined members of the nomadic Hadzabe tribe of northern Tanzania on a hunt." Now that sounds like the beginning of a very interesting story!

Surprised your image hasn't gotten more comments. It's very thought provoking! I think the landscape crop works wonderfully here, as it shows the men fanning out into a vast landscape. Amazing they were still hunting with simple recurve bows and arrows in 2007, and I imagine they still are today. (What type of animal were they/you hunting, and how in the world did you manage to go on a hunting trip with this nomadic tribe??)

All-around unique image. :toast: Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, Rick and Rebecka.

Rebecka, the Hadza hunt just about anything. I heard that a couple weeks before I arrived they killed a leopard. We were somewhat fortunate that they only killed a guinea fowl during this hunt. The single bird served as breakfast for eight hunters, and they offered us some as well. Other visitors have been offered civet, monkey and other more "exotic" game.

I documented the hunt on my website many years ago. You can view the gallery here.

This tells a great story, Max. Well seen! The striding hunter really makes this. I like the framing as-is. You might consider a slight burn of the lower right corner and the lower left corner to bring more emphasis to the hunters. The tonality works very well, here.

Max - thanks for the link to more pictures from your time with the Hadzabe. What an interesting experience you had! The pictures you took of school children are my favorites.

Re: your upcoming tours listed in your signature - Yellowstone, SA and Galapagos - three of the most amazing places I've been. Great choices for destinations. Costa Rica - probably one of the most amazing places I've never been! So tempted.
