Rainier's Grandeur

An image from my trip to the Pacific Northwest last summer. This was taken at Upper Tipsoo Lake. Instead of photographing the lake from below I hiked up until I found an overlook where I could capture Rainier's reflection in the water. At first I didn't care for the photographer standing down by the lake but after looking at this longer I decided that he provides a perfect sense of scale to the grandeur of the scene.

Thanks for looking and for any comments, and don't forget to check out the Larger version!

Hi Zach,
Nicely captured w/sky and lush green meadows. I am guessing a good 120 mm to pull in the scene from that higher hillside for this POV. Great blend…and the softened contrast and atmospheric haze adds to the mood.

I love this lake, I've never been here but it is high on my list for this year. Why would this photographer stand there, beats me, without doubt this is the better composition. I look at the sky and can't help wondering if you could tweak out a bit more color. It looks like there was color there but you're not taking advantage of it.

This should be the definition of Majestic! I had to look for a bit before seeing the man down there but you're right, he does provide an excellent sense of scale. A gorgeous image Zack.

Looks like an incredibly beautiful place.
My favorite part of the image is the lush green foreground and trees.
Disclaimer: My opinion is an untrained, inexperienced one, so......
I would rather have the background with more contrast, to match the foreground. Either that, or have the foreground with less contrast. I also think it would be better without the reflecting pond. I think it takes away from focusing on the mountain itself, especially with the mountain centered.

Regardless, these are pretty picky opinions....I think it's a really pretty scene, and having that speck of a human near the water is really cool.
