Nothing but opportunity, if you have water and a camera. This shot was taken last June in a badland area outside of Caineville, Ut. Beautiful light all evening with passing storm clouds but little or no rain.

gary - nice image - lines and tones working well here. what appears to be blending seems a little too obvious to my eye particularly on the tops of the peaks to the right ...

Wonderful light and tones, Gary. I agree with Stuart about what looks like blending artifacts above the ridges, but, otherwise, this is excellent, and this comes from someone who is not a big fan of B&W. :toast:

Thank you Stuart and Scott for your comments. Actually there is no blend here. I take great care in the conversion to keep a constant vigil for halos, particularly along ridge lines. I think this may well be accentuated by web compression. I' m holding a 13 x19 print to be framed and no haloing what so ever. Bummer it shows up here, as this is one my favorites.

Man, I just went back and looked at the version sent to the web and you are positively right. I tweeked some things before posting and screwed it up . I'll have to go back and fix it. That's what happens late at night with perhaps with a stiff single malt on board.

This looks great to me...a very powerful B&W image. I really like every element of it.

Very nicely done, Gary. The comp is very effective and it captures the feel of this place perfectly.

Very nice. I like the light especially, and its varied focus on different parts of the scene. In fact, I assumed that the darker spots at the top of the peaks showed they were in the shade... The comp here is very effective, with the strong leading lines drawing ones eye into the middle of the frame. Great image!

This is a great photo Gary. I really like your comp with the wash leading the way in. Love the textures, especially the cracked mud. Well done. Chet

Very nice leadings lines and processing, Gary.
The craked mud and ominous peaks look great.
The clouds are a tad dark for my taste.

Black and white conversion looks pretty good, the clouds near the top look a bit dark, but overall a nice looking scene.

Gary, This is a great looking scene and I really like your b&w conversion for it. I think your comp works very nice here with the foreground lines leading you back into the scene. Very nice! Bet the print is pretty cool!

Wonderful image Gary, especially the way the composition has the arroyo lead into the scene. I agree about the nits on the clouds and ridgelines, but bet the print is awesome.

Gary, this looks like a wonderful place to go exploring and your comp. with the wash leading so nicely into the distance does a lot to create that sense of invitation.
