The Amber Room

I shot this slot canyon without anyone in the frame, then a week later I had the pleasure of shooting with a friend of mine. I had already thought of the idea of adding someone in the image and it was great that the chap who joined me was dressed far more appropriately than I was. This is a double exposure, I actually wanted a few areas of blown out highlights, it just seemed more natural. The only other work required was to clone out a handkerchief he had stuck in his back pocket which looked wrong.

I have yet to print this but really look forward to seeing it framed.

Your friend in the photo must be John Mumaw. His self portrait image of this slot canyon with the same composition (but including the handkerchief) won 1st place in the M&N Gallery for 2013. Have you seen his image? His processing is much more vivid and yours much more subdued - I wonder which best represents the scene?

Hmmn, is that so. I shall have to have a little word with John about that. I tend to think mine is a bit flat.

I looked at Johns, I don't want to say too much but it was my idea to add John in the image, however, John had visited this canyon years before me and I gave him a copy of the shot because after all he was in the image. I didn't expect him to enter NPN and win though :toast:
I think John has done a better job of processing. From memory I think I gave him the blend, he must have finished it off. As images go his is remarkably accurate, perhaps the most accurate would be somewhere in between my flat one and his.

Andrew and I were side by side with our cameras within inches of each other on this day shooting this composition together and each captured the same image. He 'developed' them and I finished this one off.

Lovely light gradations, Andrew. Your friend adds a nice sense of scale to the image and he posed very well for you.
