WC#621 Backlit Bobcat

Many in the Avian forum got to see lots of bird photos from my first trip the Bosque del Apache. This bobcat was taken on my last day there...sort of icing on the cake of a a wonderful trip! I'd never, ever seen a bobcat before, so I was quite excited when I saw this very large cat cross the road about 200 yards in front of me. I tried to mark the spot where it went into the desert brush and pulled my rental car up to the spot. I didn't see it anywhere at first, and then I spotted just its head behind some of the dead brush. Don't laugh, but I let out my best cat call and darn if it didn't walk out to a clearer area and sit down! Unfortunately, it wasn't long after sunrise and I was shooting almost directly into the sun AND it was on the passenger side of my SUV! I put the lens out the window, tried to control my shaking, and got about 20 nice shots of it before it ran off into the desert.
The backlighting here was a real challenge for me, both in the taking and the processing. I did a slight crop to straighten the image, and multiple adjustments to brightness, contrast, and temp in LR, and sharpened, applied NR, created a border with NIK filters, and resized for the web in PS. I also cloned out a dark stick in the LLC in PS.

50D, 700mm, ISO 400, F6.3, 1/500 LARGER version is included! Thank you for any comments/critiques...I learn from them all, and I'd really like to know what you think of the image...good or bad. Sharon

Wow, this is a gorgeous shot, Sharon. Nice job on all the typical adjustments, and good decision to get rid of that dark stick; I can't tell there was any cloning at all. (After reading many comments over the years, I know some people would suggest cloning out that bright crooked stick over the cat's back, too; but I don't think it's necessary, because it is just another expression of the environment. If you find it distracting, you could try darkening it a bit. This is nature photography, not studio photography.)

Wayne...thank you for your very constructive comments...I had thought about removing that piece of grass, but thought it was balanced with the other 2 coming in on the other side towards the cat's face. Anyway, here is another version with that grass removed and someone in the wildlife gallery suggested darkening the edges which I thought was an excellent idea. Sharon

Sweet, Sharon. You'll have to post a recording of your "cat call"-I need to learn it. Excellent job on this.

The result looks great, Sharon. You did a fine job toning down the blow highlights on the cat's chest. I wouldn't have known without seeing the original. The pose and the complementary colors between the cat and the background are great. I'm with Wayne, it that the curly grass over the cat's back doesn't bother me in the least, it looks perfectly natural.

Fine portrait of this gorgeous cat! What a great experience to end your trip with. You captured a very nice, relaxed pose, with an intent look towards the viewer and your editing certainly has improved on the exposure and coloring. I tend to like your 3rd image the best, with the darkened vignette and the cloned grass, but the 2nd one is great too! Depends if you are going for more realistic or more artisitc.

Belated congrats on "gallery of the month" selection. . .your gallery is impressive, Sharon! :toast: Great to see a fellow Bucks Countian get this honor.

Excellent. I've seen one bobcat at Bosque, along the Marsh Loop near the boardwalk trail. but never got a photo of it.

I'm glad to find this as I poke around other NPN galleries!
