Red Butte @ Morning

After a week working with a colleague at Arizona State U, my wife and I spent the weekend near Sedona enjoying red rock country. This view was taken Monday morning on the hills behind the B&B where we stayed. It's Red Butte on the left, with Bell rock in the center and Courthouse rock at middle right. (I sure hated to take the advice of folks who commented on my "tropical ice" post to the weekly challenge that I needed to get to a warm climate. ) (5D3, 24-70 f2.8 @ 24mm, f/16, 0.4s, iso 100, tripod and polarizer) Post processed with a combination of Mark Metternich and Tony Kuyper methods. Details are best seen in the larger version.

Reminds me of Technicolor. I think you have wrung every nuance out of the RAW file with this one, Mark. Your comp has a lot of depth in it, and it probably looks very much like what it does at sunrise there. A bold statement.

There is a great amount of detail in this….
Incredibly sharp and full of vivid color which is not over the top for Sedona.
Well done.

The beautiful sky complimented nicely by the warmth of the rock formations, Mark. My only suggestion would be to tone down the cloud on the far right just a touch. Either way this is nicely done.

I like it, I use Metternich principles as well as TK's, Metternich is soon bringing out a tutorial for web processing which I look forward to. When 80% of our work end up on the web it makes sense to have it look it's absolute best.

Very nice, Mark. The morning light on the red rocks is gorgeous. Lovely place to be this time of year. Well done. Chet

Are you kiddin' me? "Behind the B&B"? Looks like they had the good fortune to establish their business in a place worthy of being preserved in a park... And you had the good fortune to catch some great light and clouds... And we have the good fortune that you are capable of composing and capturing it all so beautifully.

Nice to be able to shoot something like this and then go back to bed! Sedona is such a magical place. Lovely lighting you caught! I'm often conflicted about how much I like polarizers, and here the sky seems a little to dark blue for the time of day?

Great shot, Mark. I'm glad you finally managed to get away from that pond of yours. I really like the comp and the colors of Sedona are amazing. We live at the base of very similar red rock here in St. George, Utah. I've taken so many pictures of red rock (which is one reason I love b/w) that I think it so easy to get that electric overamped glow. I think Red Butte is getting close to that feel, not quite, but close. I hope you had a great time and I hope to see some more images for there.

Beautiful bold colors and a great view. The wispy clouds make for a nice sky

I like the comp and light very much here, Mark. Can't wait to see this place someday! Similar to another one of your images, it seems there is some haloing at the ridgeline and some interesting texture in the rock formation. It may be oversharpened or just a contrast effect that I think can be softened a bit.

Mark, What a great looking place this is. I sure would not have thought there was a B&B close by. Sure makes me think of the older western movies and technicolor.
