WC-620 Ice Bubbles

This was the surface of a small, wind-swept pond just "down the road" from Barrier Lake (Kananaskis, AB). Taken a few years back. I wish I had spent more time that day, looking for various compositions of these bubbles.

Also hope I can find another spot with these bubbles some day. This image is cropped a fair bit, as there wasn't sharpness across the frame and it was taken before I joined this site and learned about image stacking

100-400mm lens at 400mm, ISO 400, 1/500 sec at f/8.0.

I like the strong 3D sense from the bubbles at different depths. I've never seen big bubbles like this frozen into the ice, sure has me wondering about how they got there. You did well picking a pleasing comp.

Great composition Karen. Those are some very cool bubbles, I like the size, variation, and sense of depth of the bubbles. Good choice to crop out the OOF areas.

I've also never seen bubbles frozen in a pond before. They really do have a 3 dimensional feel. Beautiful.

Unique and interesting ice image, Karen. I really like the different sized bubbles at various depths in the ice. . .gives a real 3-D feel. Ice can be great fun to photograph because it can have infinite variations. These bubbles are a great find. . .hope you get to photograph this type again sometime.

Wow, I can really lose myself in this photo Karen. Your composition has a lot of depth to it and evokes an "other-worldly" feeling. I've seen ice bubble before, but never so many in one place (or maybe, I just wasn't looking). Nice catch!

I think this is a fantastic capture of those sub-surface bubbles. The 3D effect with the clear ice is mesmerizing, and I think the somewhat narrow dof may even add to that 3D feel. Limited dof is a good tool for conveying depth. If you get to shoot this again, it would be nice to compare one like this with a similar one where everything is sharp.
