Red-tailed hawk feeding on a coot

Behavior shot

I did not expect to see this nictitating membrane covering this feeding hawk’s eye. I have photographed the membrane covering the eye of birds preening and diving ducks. I have pictures of Sand Hill Cranes mucking in the dirt for bugs with the membrane over the eye. I even photographed a diving Osprey with eye cover. But when I thought about it, it made sense -- kinda like me trying to eat a watermelon with my hands behind my back ( I would close my eyes or want some protection).

The other surprising thing is that I did not expect the membrane to be reflective material – but there is a catch light.

I clicked off about 20 shots of the hawk feeding and this is the only one with the membrane covering the eye

Nice behavior Scott. Nice image technically as well. Hope you managed to get a few of him eating as well. If so, I look forward to viewing them.

Scott that makes very interesting reading, first look at your image was not sure about the eye and if you could have waited for a clear eye but after reading about the membrane think it's good as posted, do like the mantled pose.

The nictitating membrane doesn't bother me at all Scott.
Sharp details and a great pose, nice job managing the exposure as well :toast:

A nice look at the protective membrane. There seems to be a loss of detail in the feathers on the head. Wonder if your focus point was more towards the back of the bird as the feathers are so very sharp back there, or maybe it was just pulling those feathers forward. I really like the mantled pose and setting. Sharon

Neat pose, Scott. I have quite a few shots with the nictitating membrane deployed for this species-they seem to blink fairly often.
