Franklin Co. Courthouse

One of my favorite non-nature photo subjects is courthouses. When I lived in Kansas, I had photographed approximately 75 of the 105 in the state. I'm disappointed that I might not ever finish that project. This is my 2nd favorite courthouse in Kansas, located in Ottawa, the county seat of Franklin Co. It is a beaut with all that trim and the lovely Lady Justice statue. This one has been restored in the last few years and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

It's always challenging to shoot courthouses because inevitably there are cars, trees, light posts, antennas (for law enforcement radio use), etc.

It seems like a grand and worthwhile endeavor - to photograph courthouses. You are right, this one is a beaut. It is often challenging to photograph historic buildings - the people who care for them love signs, fences, and poles (and blue downspout extensions). They have no sense of the scenic.

I've been by that one many times. It's a classic! To get uncluttered photos have you considred shooting them at night? It's not hard at all. We have some county seats here in my state that have less than 100 population. One (Gann Valley,) has 28 residents. The courthouse is rarely cluttered.

I too love architectural subjects. I'm always impressed when someone has the knowledge & skill to present it so well, as you have done.

They just don't make them like this anymore. Wonderful capture.
