Alaskan Matterhorn

by Larry Fischer

Gallery: LandscapePosted January 23, 2014131 views5 comments
Taken on the south slope of the Brooks Range in northern Alaska at the confluence of the Bettles and Dietrich Rivers.
This is a morning photo which shows the mountain's texture well.
Nikon D300
Nikkor 18-200
f/7.1
1/200 sec.
Processed Capture NX2
Have a bit of noise in the upper portion which I can ameliorate. Constructive criticism sought.
Color photo at flickr.com/photos/syzygyphoto
Thanks.

Classic imagery. Nice lighting, too.

I really like the dappled morning light on these most impressive peaks. My only nit, and it's a small one, is to clone out the very small bright spot that is about a third of the up from the bottom and a third of the way in from the left. I'm sure it is a lesser peak that just caught the light . Super conversion of an impressive scene.

Gary, I see the light spot. You are correct. It would look better cropped out.
I do not have photo shop. I used Nikon Capture NX2. I see to have lost crispness with this heavily process photo.
I do have CaptureOnePhase1 raw processor but their latest upgrade does not meld well with NX2. I do the work but it will not transfer to NX2. Working online with trying to get answers from England [Capture One] is a problem.
Is there much difference I processing programs of major note? Photoshop that much better?

There has been a lot of terrific b&w images posted lately and this is right up there with the best of them,. It just screams power and majesty. Excellent sky.

Larry, personally I use Nik Silver Effects Pro 2, along with Lightroom4.4.. The Nik program is a plug-in and needs a host. Lightroom works great for me and is relatively inexpensive . Nik takes some practice but is very intuitive. I think, however you did this conversion,it worked great.
