D800 200-400mm @ 400mm F11 1/1000 ISO 560

When in Texas I am always on the lookout for Caracaras, but never seem to be able to get close enough for some good shots. While looking for hawks along the storm barrier on Galveston Island, I noticed the possum carcass on the bank of the barrier and spied this pair sitting a few hundred feet away staring my way intently. When I backed off the carcass a little, they both flew in immediately for a nice photo shoot.

I liked getting them in such close proximity so that the differences in size and coloring of the sexes can be seen.

Very nice - always harder getting two subjects looking good at the same time.

Wonderful shot and nice job in waiting for the right opportunity. Interesting to see the differences between the pair and get both in good focus, well done.

Excellent, Bob. I like the poses and the good eye contact of the front bird. Is the nictitating membrane deployed on the rear bird?

Hi Dennis

I believe what you noticed is just the reflection of the front bird's white chest showing in the top of her eye.
