Rocky Throne

As I commented on Brad's amazing Sealion photo I thought about how animals take to elevated points of land to survey their world. A much different sort of photo, but I think this photo also demonstrates that innate ability and need of animals to use the landscape to analyze their surroundings.

Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel, Rocky Mountains, Alberta
Nikon D4, 600VR, 1/640, f7.1, 0 EV, 400 iso, cropped horizontal to vertical. (I cloned out a small green plant at the base of the rocky perch, it messed up the composition for me).

Very sharp critter and I like the contrasting color of the rock compared to the rest. I would be interested to see this in a B&W since much of the image is largely B&W naturally.

Really, really good. I like the different color rock. It accents the ground squirrel. No nits from me.

Cool catch Gary! This is technically pretty much perfect I would say; super shooting angle to make this rock look even bigger, great bokeh, nice muted colours due to the soft light and excellent detail and processing. :toast:

Hey Gary,

Nice shot of a cool little critter. The pose is very classic and your techs seem spot on, but the colours are what makes this one work for me. Personal preference thing - thinking I'd like to see a little less room behind, and a little more in front, of the rock and squirrel (not much, just enough to get the eye on the mid-line of the frame).

Cheers...

Thanks to all for your comments. Brad, I agree that just a tad less room behind in favour of more in front would make good aesthetic sense (is there such a thing?). I opted to leave it as is because if I made the appropriate change it resulted in increasing the size of that rock on the edge of the frame on our left side and that became an unbalancing distraction in the composition. All about compromises. I could have whipped out the clone tool "again", but I had already used it about as much as I could justify. Thanks again for the kind comments.

Hey Gary,

I get the compromise! You probably know this (and perhaps might have ethical issues with it - as I do) but you could easily accomplish the shifting of the position of the squirrel (and perch) using Content Aware Scaling without having the fight with the rock. In some cases with CAS you have to increase canvas size first and then "scale" (or more accurately "slide") into that new space...and important to protect your subject so that it is not distorted. Simple as pie!

Cheers...

Excellent detail in the larger version. I happen to like to center composition and the wonderful color transition with complimentary background.
Well done Gary.

Awesome! The brown tones in the rocks and chipmunk work great together. Nice shot!

I think the hawk flying over this squirrels head would agree
Really like the uniform neutral gray BG, tack sharp right where it counts Gary.
Excellent shot & theme/title :toast: :toast:
