I love taking images of Africa's fine Antelope
This is Africa's largest Antelope, an Eland leaving the waterhole outside our private accommodation in Mokala National Park, South Africa.
The private waterhole comes with it

Nice capture Ken! A unique background color I am not accustomed to, but must be a local feature. I keep feeling like I want him to look back your way for just a moment. This is probably full frame, feels a bit tight at the rear hooves. Overall a pretty frame.

The red clay certainly sets the subject off nicely. Is it naturally that dark and saturated? My only wish for the eland would be for him to be angling to you, rather than slightly away.

The background is very wet Kalahari sand, which is the predominant soil in this area, it is really this red. In this case accentuated by the sun setting behind me.
Unfortunately the Eland was not posing as I would have liked, but I feel the fact that it has a catchlight more than compensates for this :toast:

Lovely colours Ken, with the eland shwoing up well against the red kalahari dirt, but just a shame he is not walking towards you instead of away from.

Martin,
Thanks very much, given the BBC winner, I thought that walking out of frame was now acceptable

Quite a dramatic over all impression with this interesting subject against the rich red sands. I like the contrasty lighting with this setting too. However, and this is a very picky point, I noticed that the bridge of the nose blends in just slightly with the dark patch of earth directly behind it. I think if some contrast adjustment could be done there the outline of the head would be more evident and benefit the photo. You are fortunate to be able to visit and photograph such a wide array of great areas and their wildlife.

Beautiful Ken, I really like the light and colors here. The Elands in Tanz are very shy, so most of my images are of the south-end of a northbound critter. That said, whenever we're lucky and do get close, I'm always amazed how gigantic they are.

Hey Ken,

Was trying to admire that beautiful red soil but some critter is in the way (and it isn't even a carnivore!!).

The terrain looks amazing! In terms of the image - the slight "tail-end" view of the subject doesn't cause me much grief, the light is striking, and techs look just fine. I find the shot perhaps a bit tight on the bottom, but not a deal breaker by any means.

Cheers...

The first thing that caught the attention is contrast between neutral colours of Eland and highly saturated colours of BG. ( You've already answered that). No problems with the pose, a technically solid frame!
