Matterhorn sunset

After a week playing tourist in Switzerland in early December, my wife and I were so tired that we headed back to the hotel around 2 pm. There, I watched a fine sunset over the Matterhorn from the balcony of our room. This image was taken near the end shortly before the colors began to fade. I've cloned out several ski lift structures along the lower ridge. (5D3, 70-200mm @ 78mm, f/13, 1/15s, tripod and cable release)

Hey Mark - that's one wicked sunset!! I really like your comp and colors. Seems like you have some haloing in the lower ridgeline, I would consider using a TK mask for midtones and using a lower opacity brush away from the sky.

Navin, the halo along the ridgeline to the left is real (it's in the raw file), probably because that's where the sunlight was sneaking under the upper clouds to provide the backside colors. The subtler halo along the right is from processing and I thought I'd fixed that...time to dive in again.

You were so lucky to witnes such a great sunset over the Matterhorn....Never been there in winter....but I'm planning to visit by the end of winter or early next winter and take pictures from Stellisee......this cloud here is awesome. Didn't know that you have such a great view from a hotel balcony.

really cool, Mark. Looks like some kinda flying electric eel dragon thing about to devour the Matterhorn.

Very dramatic , Mark. I like the energy of the attacking clouds and the color is just amazing. Great work. Chet

Nice comp and the colors are cool. I noticed the halos, too, but most print viewers probably won't. And, good work to take advantage of your great balcony view.

Mark, that is some crazy sky! Haven't seen anything quite like it. I too see halo along the ridge and peak. Is the darkening of the ridge on the left see in the RAW file as well?

Nice capture Mark. That cloud formation looks otherworldly. There's a reason no one would climb that mountain, even for 50000 Kronkites.

Very nice Mark.. Dramatically stunning actually
I think you're off in the weeds with the 'haloing' thing along the ridge line, it's just fine as posted IMHO.
Be well! :toast:
