Merry Christmas!

Why post a hoaky photo (this is Multnomah Falls) celebrating Christmas 10 days early?

Thanks so much for asking! Santa brought a new camera this past week, so I won't be shooting much with the D80 anymore. It's been an amazing workhorse over the years, having to put up with me far longer than I originally expected.

The new camera is a D7100. I elected to stay with DX for now. Since I photograph mostly for personal enjoyment, I rarely print monsters. In addition to being more economical than a full-frame, I can keep using my same lenses. One of these days though...

Nikon D80
Nikon 12.0-24.0 mm f/4.0 at 20 mm
1/6 sec. at f/16 and ISO 100

Gorgeous John! The tonal range here is awesome and B&W was the perfect choice. Congrats on the new toy - you must have been a good little boy this year!!

Good to know that I am not the only one thinking that this was a picture of a christmas tree... Very nice picture! And have fun with the new toy! The D80 is a great camera to play around with, I have turned one into an IR camera, and another one into a camera trap.

I just got out to the gorge yesterday (Sunday) and the effects of our recent freeze are still going strong!

Love this image and conversion. Hard to tell, but it looks like you may have lost detail in the ice in the lower left corner. Could also just be effect of the light on ice.

It's a beautiful shot, and well-processed. I like the darkened edges. A really good photog friend is a wildlife & bird fanatic. As such, he sticks with the DX format, which gives him more bang for his telephoto buck. He's used the D2X as long as I can remember, along with his favorite lens, the 200-400. His bird images are incredible, and they sell like crazy at juried art & craft shows in the southeast. Unless you simply have a hankering for the wider side of life, why bother?

I like this a lot, John. The tones look great. You might consider a crop from the top to eliminate that bit of cascade above the upper area of frozen spray, since I find that it tends to lead my eye out of the image. Other than that. this looks very nice.

John, your consistent ability to create outstanding compositions is much more important than whatever camera you are using. What a beautiful Christmas "tree". :toast:

John, as a (hopefully) recovering gear addict I have appreciated seeing from your work the evidence that what ultimately matters in photography is the person behind the camera. This is by no means a hoaky photo. Instead it is a very compelling and unique photo of a frequently photographed subject. I think it's very cool that the ice resembles a Christmas tree and this is an example of your ability to "see" what other's might not see - which is after all what makes a good photographer. Now to remember that when the latest and greatest cameras are introduced.

Neat shot, very well seen, John. My first glance had me thinking composite with the falls on top of a christmas tree, but nooooo! the tree is built up ice.
