Sandstone Wave

From my recent hike down Buckskin Gulch to the Paria River Confluence. This rock formation arched out from the main wall just enough to catch what little light reached it from the narrow gap in the canyon hundreds of feet above. It was my first trip with a 50mm lens, and I really enjoyed using it and finding limited, more simple compositions. Very minimal processing, just vibrance and brightness/contrast, and a little dodging in the upper left corner.

Canon 5d Mark iii, 50mm f/1.4 lens, 1.6 seconds at f/11, ISO 100, Gitzo Tripod

What a fresh and vibrant Canyonscape, Thomas!
I love the woodgrain feel of the sandstone and the unique perspective.
Well done!

Floating like a wing in motion. Nice take on this … or…perhaps pulling taffy. I like the creativity. Well done!

Great use of light and shadow here Thomas. The image has a 3D effect and it appears the sandstone is floating out of my monitor. The muted tones definitely work for me here. I'm so used to seeing the colors saturated to the max for these sandstone images, that this is a refreshing change.

Hmmm, muted colors, and a dark mood. Kind of the anti-slot shot. Works on many levels.

Thomas, Nice work on this. I like the shadow and light and how you made it flow through the frame. Pretty darn cool looking!

This is amazing Thomas! It plays tricks with my mind, and that's great! My only small nit is that I would like to have a bit more black at the bottom, but that's minor. Very well seen!!

This is an example of what to me is the greatest challenge photographing slot canyons ... using the existing light and the sculpted walls to create an appealing composition with a single exposure (which I assume this is since you didn't mention otherwise). You accomplished this exquisitely!

Wonderful abstract. I like the still life/studio feel to this.
