Moss Waterfall

by Larry Fischer

Gallery: LandscapePosted December 9, 201396 views7 comments
Taken near the small town of Eskridge, Kansas, USA in the region known as the Flint Hills. The limestone shelf was laid down my crustaceans living in the primitive seas that occasionally covered Kansas millions of years ago.
Nikon D300
Lens: Nikkor f/2.814-24 at 21 mm
1/90 sec
ISO 200
HDR presentation of 3 photos 1/2 apart. I did this to get some water motion.
Constructive criticism sought.

It has a nice grunge appeal, I think lightening the shadows a bit would look good.

Interesting textures and colors, here, Larry. I agree about opening up the shadows a bit. Also, this looks a tad soft to me. You might also look at cropping out the vegetation in the background.

Interesting composition. I agree with the others about lightening the shadows.

Thanks for the comments. I think the photo looks soft because of the slime mold/fungs/moss growing on the rock. The photo was sharpened.
I will lighten the dark areas. I left them dark for contrast.
I thought the upper background added a depth of field that would be lost. Perhaps the scene is NOT of a place but a specific area and zooming in would be better...???
Will submit an update in the next period of time.
Thanks for taking the time.

This is a real tough scene to photograph Larry. I think your comp works, but im not sure about the h2o here, i ordinarily try to avoid super long exposures but i think it might have been more effective here to try and smooth out some of the vertical lines, which are kind of 'broken' up here by the shorter exposure. Maybe shoot this with no sun, either pre/post sunrise/set or with overcast, that way you get rid of the heavy shadows below the ledge here and you get the advantage of a longer exposure. :wavey:

Thanks for the time to criticize.
It is a 'slimy' and therefore not-so-crisp photo. This stuff was REALLY slick!
I've lightened the shadow, darkened selected areas, changed the hue in others, cropped some off the top.
Not sure if this photo is salvageable but I've learned to look for things that you pointed out.
See the new rendition.
