I was heading to the beach to do some water bird photography and I was passing through an area of some buildings and thick trees, I heard a ruckus in the trees. Closer inspection revealed brown bird dashing through the branches. Further inspection revealed that another bird, a white one was in the chase. I finally realized that the birds were a juvenile and adult black-crowned night heron. I kept hoping for a shot, but the lighting conditions where terrible and they were just on a tear through the branches and leaves. Suddenly, for one brief moment, they broke out into the clear and I was able to capture this delightful confrontation between parent and off-spring. A second later the chase was back on.

This is an example of great subject matter, but not a great shot technically. However, you would have had to have been there to understand how difficult the shot was to get and how lucky I was to get it!

Shot with a Canon 70D with Canon 100-400 f4.5-5.6L lens.

Great interaction, Sandy, and a nice compromise on the focus. You don't say what the focal length on your lens was at the time, but if you could have zoomed out just a bit to get all of the adult, it would have been nice.

Thanks Dennis, it was shot at 100mm f13.0, 1/110 ISO 400. I can't begin to tell you how brief that moment was where they stopped just momentarily and then were back tearing through the trees. I would have loved to have gotten it done better technically. I will be posting one tomorrow that is very clear of a juvenile and adult Black Skimmer interacting on the beach that I shot the same day! Thanks for looking!
