South Shore Morning

by Phil Pogledich

This is an image from a beach on the south shore of Kauai, near Poipu. It's been languishing on my hard drive for over a year and I finally took a shot at processing it recently. Your comments and critiques are greatly appreciated.

Canon 5DII, 17-40L at 19mm, 1/6 second, f/16, ISO 50, polarizer.

Beautiful action, composition and colors. Nicely in focus from front to back. The texture in the clouds and ocean seems to similar that it's nice to rest the eyes on the mossy rocks in the foreground. Just the right shutter speed, too.

Eye catching Phil, especially the mossy rocks. Surf is perfectly exposed, the motion feel excellent. That big cloud is the finishing touch. Surprised this didn't jump out at you a year ago! I would have forgotten it by then

Thanks for the kind comments so far. Harry, it was one I'd flagged a year ago and I then processed a few others instead (none of which I've posted). Over time I felt none of the others was quite "right," so I went back to the original files for another look.

Sweet image. I really like the clouds/sky, perspective and popping colors.

Lovely! Your shutter speed is perfect, catching good surf action, but not freezing it. The green to blue transition works nicely also.

I like how the water entering the bowl-shaped area in the foreground is balanced and mimicked by the main cloud above. The sky and water seem to tie together well. To me (a matter of personal taste), there seems to be just a little bit too much tonal contrast in the sky and water. I do like some to bring out the definition though.

As all mention, outstanding SS, gives the photo a real feel of movement and nicely funnels to the clouds.

Nice! Shutter speed is perfect, and the greens in the foreground are really lifting this image.

The water action is great and I love the foreground elements with its color. There is also something going on in the sky...a lot of beautiful and dramatic looking clouds. You composed all those elements to a beautiful image. Well done

Very nice! I was there a few months ago but didn't get anything like this. Great shot.

This is excellent! The composition and processing look great!

It sure looks a lot warmer than the snow outside my window!

Wow--what took you so long? Id dial back the sky contrast just a hair--i think a soft sky would go better with the contrast in the surf--but otherwise this is awesome!

Thanks so much for all the feedback!. Tim, this was one of a few hundred shots I took over the course of three mornings of photography on Kauai. You'd think it would be easy to get a few keepers in such a beautiful setting. Not so...I think this may be the only one.

Doug/Stan, I appreciate your comments on dialing back the tonal contrast in the sky. I understand what you're saying and I'll give that a shot...

Fantastic Phil! I almost thought this was a mountain background from the thumbnail; great cloud. This makes me feel like I'm there.
