Boreal Chickadee

Canon 1D-X, 300mm f2.8, handheld
f3.5, 1/250, ISO1800

Taken at about solar noon. This time of year, there's just not much light. As aggravating as it is for a photographer, it's a real problem for wintering birds, who must pack 24 hours critical food energy finding into about 3.5 hours of daylight, all at -20 F.

The low light performance of the 1D-X is impressive. 50% of full frame. Selective sharpening.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

I'd never suspect those shooting parameters from the image - nice results for so little light.

Beautiful, Jim. Excellent detail and a sweet pose. The Chickadees may only have 4 hours, but that gives the owls 20!

Jim, I can't imagine shooting (or living) in those conditions and you've handled them admirably here. Great little bird, IQ exceptional for the conditions and I like your composition and the feeding behavior. Exceptionally well done.

You can tell he's cold; he's really fluffed up! Nice one, Jim!
Hey, a warm spell is supposed to roll across the state in the next couple days.

Nice job in the low light. The seed in the beak adds a lot to this shot. I also like the fluffy look.

Jim it must be tough to just live up there never mind take pictures.
This bird looks really nice puffed up against the cold and looks like your camera copes very well with your conditions.
