$125 Sunrise...W/Repost

I finally got around to processing a few of my images from my brief visit up to Glacier earlier this summer. Here's one taken one morning at Triple Falls.

The title comes from the ticket I received upon returning to my vehicle; not for hiking to the falls, but for "overnight camping". Apparently the overachiever who wrote me up that day must have been having a bad day and needed to fill her quota for the month. I tried explaining to her that I had arrived at Logan's Pass parking lot early that morning for a sunrise shoot but she didn't want to hear it. Meanwhile, while I was waiting for the ticket, there were people chasing the Bighorn Sheep (within a few feet!) around the parking lot with their point and shoots.. Oh the things you can get away with by being a tourist. In the end I paid the fine but not without calling and raising hell with her supervisor and the head Ranger of law enforcement for the entire park.

Hopefully this sort of thing doesn't become the "norm" in places such as this.

Interested in hearing your thoughts on this one. See Larger!

The Techs:
5 Horizontal Frames Stitched (all double processed for highlight control), All taken @ 11mm
4 Separate Frames to control the sky
Lots of patience.

Always love this spot. Mtns seem too bright to me...and that sounds like a crapload of post work. Yikes!

Great place! I like the composition, but do agree with Aaron that the mountains are too bright. It could be just me, but the cyan in the water is bit over-saturated. Other than those items already mentioned, this looks really nice.

Beautiful light Zack. And the only payment they would have gotten would have been my middle finger...

Zack, I'm a stitching freak. I've been doing it for years and I've come to the conclusion that in the end its all about what the final internet image reveals....so....with all that honorable stitching aside, and treating this image "as is" I think your mid to foreground lighting is a good 1-1.5 stops too overexposed. Sure, the mountains seem too exposed however overall I think the top half to 2/3rds of this image seems too exposed. Your water highlights are close to losing detail. Personally I would start from the top and blend my way down, ensuring the top 2/3rds is properly exposed. Your existing bottom 3rd foreground feels good to my eye however if you had to knock it down a notch to compensate for a darker upper third, I would be cool with that.

Zack - I would agree with Kane's comments on brightness, especially for the top portion. But, I might disagree about the power of a stitch. I recently had an image selected for use in an airport that will be 30 x 9 ft. and it was a result of a stitch that allowed the huge enlargement. So you never know how the image may be used down the road. I suspect your decision to stitch was to cover the entire view. It must be one wide view! Water looks better in the repost. Sorry to hear about the ticket, that does suck!

Thanks for the helpful suggestions guys, here's another repost based on the feedback I received. I've reduced the exposure of the sky and mountains and also brought back some detail in the water. How does this look?

I thought the original looked fine, but the repost may be an improvement. I like the comp and your perspective here. The distant mts look a tad 'muddy' in contrast but theat may be partly due to the light. It's a winner overall. Bummer about the ticket, i would have ticketed them for harassing me. :wavey:

This is a really fine composition. From the "over the edge" foreground to the distant mountains everything looks very natural. Incredible job in crafting this image.

Zack, this is a very nice image. To me the best part is the variety of colors that go well together. The mountains on the left seem a bit soft, but overall, it's a pleasing scene.

One of the best I have seen from here. Excellent use of the super-wide to get up close and personal.

The repost looks great, Zack. The POV here is fantastic as is the bit of drama in the sky. Really sucks about the ticket. She must have been having a bad day as my interaction with rangers has always been positive. I do like Joe's payment suggestion.

Nice photo! Congrats on some intensive processing! Definitely disagree with the ranger about the ticket for camping overnight when your explanation was perfectly reasonable. I am under the impression that this area is closed to foot traffic, so you're really lucky you didn't get ticketed for that, as that would have been way more expensive!
