I enjoy trying to capture the rays of light and the silhouettes created by the early morning sunlight.

Please comment and critique.

Location: Grand Canyon south rim, Arizona, USA

Date and Time: August 8, 2013 at 07:31

Equipment: Pentax K-5, Pentax DA 16-45 f/4 at 40mm, tripod

Exposure: 1/750s, f/8, iso 100

Post processing with Lightroom 5: Increased temperature to add warmth. Burned sky and background with graduated filter. Dodged extreme foreground to slightly expose details.

Very nice Randy with nice beams curling around the peak. I think it looks good with a crop from the left to the edge of the centre ridge to focus attention on the beam area. But still very nice as presented. Nice job.

Beautiful use of layers and those beams work very well here, Randy. While I like this as is, I think it would be even stronger with Bill's crop suggestion. I really like the mood in this scene.

I like that you attempted something like this. A very nice effort.
I might try to lighten the very far layer just a bit for more contrast.

Thank you for the kind comments and suggestions, Bill, Ed, and Dan. Here is a new version of the image with the left side cropped out, the aspect ratio changed from 16:9 to 7:5, and the farthest layer brightened up. In my opinion, this version emphasizes the sunrise and rays more.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving. :wavey:

Randy, the repost works very nicely. I think the lighter version allows the rays to venture deeper into the scene so more depth into the canyon is better.

Simple comp with beautiful soft light and subtle details. The beams are icing on the cake. Nicely done Randy!

Thanks for looking, Howard, Paul, and Joseph. It was well worth the early morning visit to the south rim to capture the fleeting sunrise. (My wife and son were still tucked in their sleeping bags when I returned to camp.)
