Trampled to Death + re-post
by Nancy Lea Sandy
This is a headwaters spring. Three years ago, it ran fast and free, bouncing over rocks and gurgling through the meadow. It was a great place to find the water abstracts I'm so fond of taking. This particular spring is located in the Stock Drive (which falls under the management of the BLM) For some reason, they have issued "after trail" grazing permits to a local rancher the past few years. It is my understanding that these permits are only for a duration of a few weeks but the cows stay on this spring for three or four months at a time. The only grazing left up here at this time of year is in the riparian areas of the creeks and the herd of clumsy hooves has taken a toll on this little spring. If this continues another year or two, this spring will no longer run water at the surface a a pretty little stream will cease to exist. (and yes, I wrote asking about it but the BLM has not responded)
I wish it was a requirement of all grazing leases to fence off the areas surrounding freshwater springs. They are so easily damaged by over use.
