White Pelican Banditry

11-24-13 While at El Dorado Park in Long Beach, California waiting to shoot Ospreys a few days after the Trout plant, we observed that the White Pelicans seemed to never feed on their own, but attempted to take fish away from the Cormorants when they were fruitful. This shot captures the action, and several Pelicans are outside the frame. It is uncropped.

Nikon D4 Nikkor 600mm 1.4TC 850mm ISO400 1/2000 f/10 White Balance Auto Tripod with a Wimberley Gimbal. Minimally processed in CS6, Lightroom and NIK.

Great action shot. I like the water splash. Good detail; very sharp, especially considering the action taking place. :toast:

Excellent documentation of attempted kleptoparasitism. Good work on the whites and blacks, and the high shutterspeed freezes the motion nicely. A vry fine shot, Patrick.

Great action, Patrick. I'm glad you left the incoming bill at the top-it adds to the crowd feel.

That's some awesome frenetic action Patrick, nice job with the techs to get both a lot of shutter speed and dof. :toast:

Wow!!! Awesome action behavior action you captured Patrick. The tail hanging out of the cormorant's mouth is a big bonus.

Sweet Photo!!!
