Forest Kingfisher

Another Australian species, and quite a common one. They seem to have a more cosmopolitan diet than our species and you find them all over the area we were in. This one was perched on a gate post which made finding a workable composition difficult. The whites may look blown, but the histogram says they're not; I think it's just the contrast with the dark bg.

7D, 500mm f4 + 1.4TC, propped on vehicle window sill, f5.6, 1/3200, Av mode with no compensation, iso 500. Processed in CS6 and cropped to 8.3MP. I cloned out some wire on the fence post (it wasn't rusty enough to fit the ambiance).

Your comments and criticisms are most appreciated.

Thanks for looking,

Looks good, Dennis, except for the top of the head, which is a little hard to pull out of the background. Also a bit on the centered side.

Nice bird and nice shot, Dennis. The perch isn't ideal but crusty enough to appeal. If it were mine, I might select the top of the head and brighten it just a bit to pull it off the dark background.

Nice shot of this little Aussie. Nice light, good pose and BG and excellent IQ. I would probably uncenter him a little bit as Phil suggested but overall a nice shot.
