Northern Saw-Whet Owl

This bird was at the top of my wish list for some time, and I finally got a few photos earlier this year. Several saw-whets had been seen at a wildlife refuge up in BC, but every time I went I couldn't find them. Finally, I asked a volunteer where to look, and they promptly located four of them for me!

At that point I came to understand why I wasn't having much luck. They're much tinier than I expected (pygmy owl size) and spend their daylight hours hidden under pine branches. One was actually perched directly over the trail, two feet above my head as I walked by, and I never would have found it without help. This was the best view I had of any of the four.

Of course, since they were sleeping, getting any view of the eyes was nearly impossible. I believe this one peeked because a loud child ran by. I'd like to improve on this image (hopefully this winter), but I do feel it gives a great sense of their typical daytime environment, tucked away beneath the branches.

Max. I like this image. It does seem to convey a nice sense of this owl doing what it does during the day. Thanks for sharing the story.

This is very typical of them in the daytime and I see nothing much that needs improvement. If this isn't cropped a lot already I'd consider taking a little off the top and left edge to minimize the out-of-focus bright leaves, or perhaps darken them a bit.

Congrats on getting this species on camera ! I like the framing by the branches - adds to the 'difficult to spot' atmosphere you described ! Cheers, Hans

Nice, Max. Excellent pose and good luck getting the eyes open, even if someone had to disturb the bird.

Max,

When I saw the thumbnail, I thought I would like this and I do, very much.
Would you be kind enough to post a large version so that I can view it even better.

I am very envious! I like the piney perch and the owl is too cool. The framing of the OOF pine needles is nice. Personally I would burn down the bright areas of the pine boughs a little but I would take this beauty in a heartbeat! Great job! :toast:
