I drove west of town on a late September evening because it looked like there might be a nice sunset. Running out of time, I turned onto this gravel road and jumped out of the car about 20 seconds before this exposure.

Please comment and critique.

Location: Gravel road 5 miles west of Austin, Minnesota

Equipment: Pentax K-5, DA* 300mm, handheld

Exposure: 1/350s, f/4.5, 100 iso

Crop: Left - about 5% to remove half of a pole shed. Right - about 10% to balance the placement of the sun, power line, and gravel road.

Post-processing: Dark trees dodged to show some detail. Road dodged to contrast with the rest of the image.

This works very well, with just enough visibility in the foreground of the larger version to show a number of interesting details. That hilly road is really neat.

Amazing sunset! Very nice treatment of that color. The road and highline wires give us a lot of info about the terrain. Nicely done. Chet

I have no problems using silhouettes and underexposure but I think in this case too much real estate is taken up by that very dark area without enough details to justify its inclusion. I would be interested to see how it looks with the bottom 2/3 brought up by a stop. It looks like a fine composition but perhaps not served so well by the lighting or exposure.

That is a fair assessment, Kah Kit. Here is a new version with the exposure of the bottom 2/3 increased (maybe a bit much). The power line still stands out.
