Yellowstone Bison

In July I made a special trip back to Yellowstone, in part to partake in my first aerial shoot. It was a lot of fun seeing familiar places from a new perspective, including the Lamar Valley. We started a bit late in the morning (9am or so) partially due to my desire to hit some of the park's thermal areas later in the day. As a result, it wasn't the ideal time for wildlife. Activity had died down by the time we made it into some of the better traditional areas for wildlife. We did see one grizzly bear, some deer and elk, but the main wildlife attraction was bison. There were some sizeable herds gathered in the Lamar, so I was able to get a few abstracts from above.

Overall, it was a really fun (though expensive) endeavor, and shooting out the window of a plane proved to be quite challenging. The wind buffets you constantly. I must say I prefer shooting from a helicopter.

I love aerial photos of wildlife and habitat like this. Interesting how the shades of green are dictated by the proximity to the creek/water. There isn't an identifiable focal point or "catch" for the eye to rest on here. So, wonder if perhaps a wider angle might have worked to show a grander scale. I know that this would further reduce the bison to barely identifiable specs, but their identity requires some explanation anyway. This landscape might work very well as a diptych or triptych, again showing the larger landscape but in a series of horizontal or verticals. Not sure how easy it would be to do this, no personal experience at aerial. Thanks for sharing this unique photo Max.
