Virgin River

Spent a couple days in Zion NP earlier this week. Brought my two teens and since the fall colors overall were a disappointment the focus was less on photography and more on just hiking and having fun with my kids. However, I liked how this image turned out (Virgin River, Zion Narrows). Your thoughts on further refinements? ~ 14mm, f/18, 2.5 sec, ISO 100.

For lack of color you sure got some nice color here! I dont think it needs any refinement--i think it just needs rock removal.

Stan, you're killing me. That's the same article where you say if you see another image of Maroon Bells you'll puke. ;)

Jared, I think I agree with Stan on this one. To me this is a great example of overusing an ultra-wide lens's ability to distort foreground objects (not just rocks), and like Stan, I noticed this because I was doing it myself, for example with a photo I took of a salmon in Eagle Creek - http://gallery.thaney.com/product/journey-s-end . It's a great ability to have and use sparingly, but that little rock overwhelms the photograph. I think sometimes we pay too much attention to the "rules" of composition, and not enough to how aesthetically pleasing the composition actually is. I think if you had backed up 2 feet and gotten 1 foot lower, the rock would have added to the composition without dominating it, just my 2 cents. Other than that, the processing and color look great.

I like the comp and shutter speed on the water. Was this with a Nikon 14-24, Sambowyang 14mm, or Canon 14mm?

Thanks for posting, Jared! :toast:

Thanks for the helpful feedback so far. As to the foreground rock, what I liked was the lines and curves that formed in the water around the rock, but it's helpful to get that feedback for future efforts.

Johan, the lens was the Nikon 14-24 with adapter on a 5DIII.

Jared. A very nice image you made here, and all while you were enjoying the day with your kids which is always a great thing! I love the flow of the water and the light made those yellow leaves pop out so nice! I'm not a huge fan of the foreground rock but I think the image still works quite nice. Like you said the flow of water around it looks pretty cool.

I think the FG rock would look fine if you had used a polarizer or removed the glare on it in PP.
I like the colors a lot.

Hi Jared, whatever you do, do not ever sell the 14-24mm. I shoot Canon, had that lens for a long time and sold it because I needed whatever and now I totally regret it.

I'm not a big fan of the foreground rock. It's just way too In My Face. That rock is the same size as the beautiful series of brilliant trees. Ask your self this...In this image, what do you want to convey to your clients? They're eyes are split equally between a wet, round rock and a spectacular distant clump of fall color and red sandstone wall. My eyes want the opposite.

Beautiful image with great colors Jared. I don't mind the rock but possibly smaller to not take so much of the scene up.
Nice motion in the water also. Great job on this.

Sounds like a great way to spend a couple of days, Jared. The colors may have been a disapointment, but you managed to catch some nice color for this image. For my tastes the FG rock is a little much; just my opinion of course. The processing looks perfect and I too like the water flow around the rock.

Great light and color. I like the comp, so there's a different opinion, I guess. Also, I do wish the reflections on the rocks weren't there. Overall a winner in my opinion.
