Autumn Leaf

This is a maple-leafed hydrangea in my front yard. A couple days ago at sunrise it was being backlit by the sun so I took a few photos. Most of the leaves at that time were changing color, but only on one half of the leaf, which was interesting. I normally don't do macro/closeup photography so any critiques you may have would be most helpful. Please see larger version.

I agree, the split color of the back-lit leaf grabs your interest Scott.
Like the diagonal comp & high level of segmentation detail I see..
Perhaps a minor crop from your top-left corner where it begins to fall off a bit?
Well done :toast:

I like the light, colors and superb detail, Scott. Excellent close up image. I think stopping down a bit more may have helped maintain detail throughout the image, but this is really good as is. I agree with Howard's suggestion that cropping some off the top, making the result more square, may be advantageous. Thanks for sharing. :toast:

very nice....but to show this as an example of the pure beauty of the leaf, you might heal as many of the scars on the left as you can. As is, it is realistic...but, I can see it as standing out as a clean example of the beauty of a fall leaf. :wavey: I do so like the color difference. I, especially, like that the darker side appears to have bumps, while the lighter side appears to have depressions...very cool in one leaf. :wavey:

This looks very good, Scott. I like the color change, your placing the main vein on the diagonal, the fine lighting and all of the great detail. It does look like you're losing sharpness along the main vein in the upper left corner. DOF at this magnification is very challenging, which is why I do a lot of macro stacks or push the f stop. My 100mm macro goes to f/32 and I've tested it and see minimal loss of sharpness due to diffraction even at f/22, with f/25 still acceptable.
