This shot was taken on a recent trip to Jasper. After a day and half of not seeing much, it was as though this bull was calling us over to the clearing he was standing in - saying - hey guys, over here!

Comments, critique and suggestions always welcome.

Cheers
Rick

Tech stuff: Canon 1D4, 500-f/4, f/8, 1/200, ISO-640, Spot Metering, Manual Exposure, Tripod. 10% crop left and bottom, and sharpened for the web.

Good pose you caught this elk in. I also like the environment he is in. Does appear a bit soft. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rick,

Classic rockies scene - and that's one very nice bull! Both the autumn colours and the pose of the bull are great here. I do find myself wishing that that there was perhaps a bit better separation of the bull from the background (so thinking perhaps opening up the aperture a little bit and softening the background might have been worth experimenting with). Although I have no idea at all on the "quality" or aesthetics of the terrain outside the frame, when I look at this shot I wonder if there was a really stunning "animalscape" shot (i.e., with bull relatively smaller in frame) to be had here? But...shot as posted captures a very nice bit of Alberta natural history!

Cheers...

Brad

Lovely natural colours in this image Rick. You have quite nice separation between the bull and BG, but my thoughts are the same here as Brad's about choice of aperture to blur that BG a little more.

Sorry to hear that Jasper was slow, it does seem that the elk population there isn't what is used to be. :frown: This is a very nice bull though Rick and quality trumps quantity usually. Because the bull is so impressive I rather like his size in the frame, although Brad's suggestion is certainly a valid one! After studying the bull for a while I'm thinking I have seen this guy, he has a lump above his left stifle (knee) from what appears to be from a deep wound just below that lump.

Rick,
This works for me although I think a tad of selective sharpening on the head would help.

I feel you nailed the rich colors of the bull and the surrounding vegetation. I, too, would like to see more of the setting.
