Captured this Green Darner Dragonfly out in my Koi pond in Virginia as it went from lily to lily with its tail submerged. It was moving it from side to side, maybe laying eggs? I loved the lighting on this!
Canon 7D, 100-400L@ 320mm, f/6.3, iso400, handheld and cropped for composition.
C&C welcome

Excellent, David! If you have a little more on the left and took a bit from the right the DF would be less likely to move off frame so easily.

Excellent ++, David. Love the pose, light, detail and colors. Only nit are the diagonal stems above the DF's wings. Could easily be cloned out, of course, if you are so inclined. :toast:

You are absolutely right David. Laying eggs on stems and such under water. I really love the reflected light from the water showing up on the body of the dragonfly. Very cool, great focus. Nice job.

Thanks for the comments and sugestions, as for the cloning of the top stems, I get nervious with them being too close to the wings..I will have to ponder this!!

David, the colors and details in the df are great, as is the pose. I had to check because the behavior does sound like a female, but the colors look male. I found in "Dragonflies and Dmselflies of the East, Dennis Paulson" that female Green Darners can be polymorthic, with a minority of females colored like the males, so I believe that you're right about this one laying eggs. I would suggest burning in those stems and that oof pad upper right rather than cloning. You should be able to do that (especially if you use a mask) with minimal effects on the wings. My minor nit is that I'd like to not see the edge of the pad the df is on cut off.
