Alaskan moose

Photographed this big guy in DNP several years ago BD. He was bellowing as if he was trying to talk a much smaller moose to come out and play. The smaller moose was deep in a thicket and not moving.
His attention seemed to be all on the small moose which gave ample time to get some good photos. Until see the attached photo.

With little warning he went from standing to charging!. While close to where I was standing he was actually heading towards the smaller moose in the ticket, who being a smart little moose stayed put. I had taken care of moose when I was a zoo keeper at the Minnesota Zoo. To see these moose, the largest sub-species in the world with no barriers between us was quite a thrill. I know neither photo is first rate technically, but I wanted to share the experience.

John, I enjoyed hearing your experience to go with the images - I can appreciate how these guys seem giant when you get close to them. Nice mature bull and some great colorful habitat to go with.

Wonderful subject and colorful setting. The photo appears a bit soft to me John, not that unexpected when film limited us to those iso's of 50 or 100 back in the day.

It makes a great series-duo, John. I love the posture and urgent action of the second frame!

Catching the before and during is amazing. That would be moose behavior worth seeing to be sure. :toast:
