I took this shot of a young female about 5 weeks ago on a bear tour in Knight's Inlet B.C. I had hoped to rent a proper wildlife lense in Victoria before heading up the coast to Telegraph Cove, where the tour originated but unfortunately the only place that rented lenses was closed the day I needed to depart so I had to use my 18-200. It didn't quite have the reach I wanted but nevertheless I was able to salvage a few shots from the trip. The experience was well worth the 7 hours of standing in the rain though we came very close to getting skunked on seeing any Grizzlies. If it hadn't been for the tenacity of our guide we would not have seen this and 2 other bears but he pushed on when the other 2 boats with us gave up and turned back. There was a fairly thick canopy on the river and between that, the crappy weather and the late hour the light was pretty poor. I had my iso cranked up quite a bit more than I prefer. Thanks for looking, comments appreciated.

Carey,
Nice image despite all the troubles you had, great pose captured of the Grizz, and the environment is very good.
Thank goodness for ' Tenacious Guides ' . . . :toast:

I like this in that it gives such a terrific sense of place along with an active pose, with head turn. Cool. I would have liked to see a larger size posting included to better assess detail.

Wonderful setting Carey! I like the way the water curves around the bottom and into the distance, nice colors in the water with some excellent highlights as well. A fine head turn and pose, have to like that!!! Very pleasing photo you should be proud of. :toast:

Very good! I like the setting you got this guy in, and thanks to your guide. I also would like to see a larger image, this one seems very sharp so shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for sharing.

Very cool image. It's really too bad you couldn't get the longer lens in time, but it looks like you did very well anyway! I like all the environment around him. I would love to see a larger version.

I think this is quite nice! I like habitat shots. Not all wildlife needs to be in your face zoomed in on, in my opinion. You have quite a bit of sharp detail for f5.6! As others said, thanks to your guide!

Lil,
This to me proves that a long lens need not be the be all and end all, if you had one you probably would not have gotten as much environment in the shot. :toast: :toast:

Thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry no large version this time but I will be posting a few more images of this bear shortly and will try to include a larger version. As mentioned I was grateful that our guide kept pushing (literally, as the tide was slow to rise) the skiff we were in up river. He said he hadn't been skunked all season and didn't want to quit. Regardless had we not seen any grizzlies we did get a decent photo opportunity of a black bear on the boat ride out to the inlet and coastal grey wolf came out into the estuary and put on a show for us twice.
