WC601 Over the Edge...

...Literally

Basalt Columns, Iceland

These basalt columns came straight up out of the ocean around 50-75 feet high. I wanted to get a shot showing the cliff so I grabbed the bottom of my tripod legs, held the tripod and camera out over the edge and used my shutter release cable to trip the shutter. Tried 3 or 4 times before I got the composition I wanted.

Any critiques would be greatly appreciated.

Way to use your imagination to get a great shot of those columns.

Very fine and pretty amazing for guessing as to the composition. I can't imagine a better image if you'd been looking through the viewfinder.

Sorry, I mistakenly used a 600 pixel photo. I tried to go in and delete the post but jack responded too quick.

 Scott, I thought I was the only one who ever did this wild extension approach over the edge type shot. Although, I knew ahead of time my plan and had my monopod with me for that particular outing. I'm deathly afraid of "edges" like this too...

I like this view and it's too bad you got the wrong size posted. I think we've all done that at some time or another.. Regardless, this is unique and very nicely executed for the somewhat 'hairy" angling to obtain the shot. I could see a bit more clearance on the narrowing of the cliff to the right edge here. That is a very simple change and might be worth a try for another look. Again, a nice take on this different type of formation and POV. ......

Fabulous colors and lines. Well worth the hair-raising experience...you must have good insurance! It's hard to get a sense of scale but it makes a lovely abstract.

Indeed! Beautiful colors in this one and I especially like how the columns fan out near the bottom. Glad you and your equipment made it through this shot.

Great perspective! Love the colors and the composition. Your description of holding the camera out over the edge gives me chills - with my luck, mine would have dropped off the tripod right into the drink.

Fascinating rock structures and an excellent "over the edge" capture, Scott! Composition is good, especially considering the method and the colors and detail are excellent.

Oh, I love the colors and the dynamic feeling in a shot that otherwise contains only elements. Great shot!
