Cycle of Rock, Cycle of Forest

Sunset at Crater Lake, the light was not shining into the lake itself but we saw layers of fog over the horizon facing away from the lake. Turns out these were not fog, my friend told me the next day it was smoke from the forest fire. No wonder the sky was lingering bright orange for an hour after the sunset.

5D2, 16-35II @ 35mm, ISO 400, tripod, 5 exposures blend.
C&C welcomed!

I like this a lot Zhoen. Surprised there are not any comments. The light on the foreground rocks, the mist on the mountains, and color in the sky are beautiful.

A very nice and peaceful scene. Sweet light and a first rate composition. Love the sweeping curveline of the trees and the fog. The sunstar is tastefully captured, as well. 'Development' is excellent with no obvious signs of it (always a good thing, right?).
Simply excellent photography all the way around!

Overall, I like the comp. though I wish there was more of a focal point of interest in the FG. The sunstar looks too perfect for me, as if it has been worked over in PS. I'm not a huge fan of vignetting, so the sky seems to have some obvious work done. I might have createda more graded and larger area, especially on the left side. The processing and smoke look great.

Thanks all for the critiques and comments. :)
John, I’ve seen your work and critiques posted here so your positive comment means a great deal.
Harry thanks for your feedback. I will clean up the vignetting in the sky; I can see what you mean in the ULC.

Zhoen,

This is a unique capture of Crater Lake with no Lake

I like the arrangement of rocks in the foreground, and the trees frame the Sunset in nicely. The valley mist is also a good addition with the contrasting color and cooler tones.

My only nit here is that I also agree that the sunstar does not look natural and is "over accentuated". Mainly the lower half of the sunstar is the issue for me.

Nice capture!

Thanks James :) . While the sunstar may look overly processed, it was one image for the bottom rays and another to clean up flares. Since the foreground rock may not be the most interesting subject, I feel the sun connects all the elements together. Your feedback is always appreciated.
