The warm side/back lighting is very interesting in this photo, it's subtle and mysterious. The subjects are idle, perhaps a raised foot, trunk or flared ears to give a little more oomph? Certainly the low key sombre feeling in this scene has its own beauty as well, gentle giants indeed.

Hey Morkel,
Very, very sweet light - and handled well at capture and/or during processing. Some might argue that the giraffe is distracting, but that isn't my feeling at all. When I looked at the larger version I did find the birds (I think) by the giraffe's feet just a tad distracting (probably because I instantly tried to figure out what they were - bird, not-bird, if bird what kind, etc. rather than simply enjoying the image). But I can certainly see why you are keen to get back there!
Thanks for sharing the impressive shot...nice to look at!
Cheers...
Brad

Thanks Jenaya and Brad.
Brad - those are Kori Bustards, the heaviest flying bird in Africa (and the world if I am not mistaken).
