Eagle honing in on GBH
by Nate Chappell
The amount of interaction between Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons during spring and summer low tides at Hood Canal, WA is what makes this location unique for photography. It's the only place I have seen regular competition between these 2 species for food. The eagle will generally come in, the heron will drop the fish and the eagle will grab it while the heron flies off squawking loudly. This instance was a little bit different as the heron went underwater just after this shot, dropped the fish and the eagle couldn't find it and flew off. I'll post a series in the bird photography discussion forum later today. Taken during this year's photo workshop there. To get both birds sharp I need both a fair amount of shutter speed and depth of field, in the somewhat low morning light I had to go to iso 1600 which with the 5D3 works fine. I just wish we had been closer to this encounter as it's a good sized crop.

Well done! amazing to see I am sure! you must have been far away, but caught the action and mostly sharp on the eagle. the gbh seems a little soft though.
