Hide and Seek Lion Style

Another one for international lion day. While our two love birds were off doing their thing, the rest of the pride was busy caring for the three six month old cubs they had. This little one was practicing ambush tactics on one of his/her siblings.

In the name of full disclosure, I cloned out an unsightly elephant dropping that was in the foreground. Suggestions always appreciated....thanks!

I'm envious, this must have been so much fun to watch. You captured some interesting and cute behaviour very well. I wouldn't likely crop this particular photo any more than you have, but a longer lens to concentrate on just the body and some of the log he's hiding behind might make this even stronger. That would solve the elephant dropping problem too.

Hi Joseph, if this was FF then a nice 16 x9 crop I think could have also been another option. This would cut out a lot of the busy FG, placed the cub more to the RHS and still retained the engaging look. As this is approx 60% crop then going even more into the image will certainly loose you IQ, clarity & sharpness sadly. I think you could have also afforded to drop the ISO to 400 based on the SS, it's good to keep the SS high, but also to keeping the ISO low when you can too, a balancing act.

Very fine pose you've captured. The other made some suggestions i agree with so I won't repeat those. Lovely image!

Joe,

Always plenty of ET's in Africa

Always nice to see someone being adventurous in their travels rather than the same old places.

Nice pose from the cub, I might consider taking a little from the bottom :toast: :toast:

Thanks folks! As Steve mentioned, it's already cropped in quite a bit already so cropping more just causes the IQ to go downhill fast. If only Canon would drop the price of that 600mm cannon down to something that wouldn't cost me my arm (the other gear has already cost a leg).

You would be better off with the 500 unless you do birds, but the 200-400 would give you far more flexibility.
