Storm, Machu Picchu

Clearing Storm over Machu Picchu.

Storm clouds clear shortly after sunrise, revealing the dramatic splendor of the ancient ruins of the lost city of the Inca.

An iconic place for sure, but I tried to shoot a different composition than the classic scenes most people are familiar with. I hope it works.

Thanks for looking,

Mike Anderson

It's great to see this scene with the terraces on the right. You're right...it is a unique and thoughtful composition.
Best of all, it works! The low clouds and selective light look great, too.

Amazing that this place was ever built. It still seems like it would be nearly impossible today. Very nice presentation.

Really like the sunrise light from this vantage point. A good way to avoid the masses that are generally on the other side of the terraces. I was in almost the exact spot for late afternoon, and it was especially quiet and peaceful compared to the chaos around. Also, not much room for others to get in front of your shot  I guess no alpacas at this time of day. The clouds make it magical. Nicely done!

Thanks everyone! I took this image in the spring of 2010 after the heavy floods that washed out the railroad and parts of the Inca trail. The ruins were closed for months, but reopened the day before I took this image. There were hardly any people around which really added to the majesty of the experience. Harry, I love your images from here and from Patagonia. South America is magnificent!

Nice Composition Mike. I like the circular lines moving into the center of the photo that seem to continue in the curve of the peaks around the back of the lower ruins. Foreground light is wonderful. Clouds in upper right are a bit bright, but well handled. The view goes on forever. Nice.
