Gooseberry Falls

I just returned from a trip to northern MN, WI and Upper MI and had a great time. I really enjoyed the time and working on a few new images. This is one I shot at Gooseberry Falls on the north shore of Lake Superior in MN. A place that usually has lots of people in the summer but on this early morning I was the only one there, at least for about an hour. I liked the cool blue tones in the color version but really wanted to go B&W with this. Appreciate any of your thoughts on it. 5D3, 35mm, ISO 100, f/20 and 0.4 sec exp.

I am really like the tight, intimate look. Excellent tones in the conversion, too. It really needs to be viewed large and then it really pops.

Fantastic B&W Nick! Love it. Water motion is perfect in my book.

Great composition on this! I especially like the foreground and the details of the water coming off the falls and out over the ledge of rock. It's an easy and pleasant journey to watch the rest of the falls cascade around the gentle arch. Nice shutter speed for the water flow. Gorgeous in black and white.

Along with the wonderful composition is the stunning b&w conversion on this one, Nick. I cannot see anything not to like here, instant wall hanger IMO. :toast:

Thanks much for your comments on this. I'm happy you liked the b&w conversion too. I really did enjoy the time I had alone here on that morning earlier this week. It gave me more of an opportunity to work on compositions without trying to work around someone which has quite often been a problem here. It is a cool place and I see why all the people go there. Appreciate your comments so far. Nick

A marvelous photograph. I applaud you for choosing black and white. We seem to see little of it on NPN, and even less as well done as this.

The photograph is good, quite good, but I get the feeling that it is truncated and I wonder why you chose 35mm instead of a wider lens.

Very 3 dimensional feel to this. Maybe slightly too grey in your whites, especially near frame, but digging this one. Nice work!

Thanks Aaron, That is a good point and since I'm probably going to print this I will work on the whites a bit and see how it looks. Appreciate your thoughts on this and glad you liked it. Nick

Thanks to all of you for your comments on this. As always they are much appreciated!
Buck, Thanks! I do have some wider shots of this but I really wanted to eliminate some of the surrounding rock and cliff in this shot. I guess I just wanted a little tighter comp overall which seemed quite appealing to my taste. I appreciate your thoughts and I'm glad you enjoyed this. Nick

I love the rich tones here, Nick! Outstanding conversion and use of light. The bowed line comp is just as good, too. :toast:

Love your comp here Nick. Excellent ss to capture those water textures so well. b&w was a great choice and nicely converted. I agree popping the water highlights a bit in the fg would be a nice option.

Nick, I sure like the arching view of this falls. The b&w emphasizes the motion of the water and the big curve. Very well seen.
