2 Swallowtails/1 flower

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted July 26, 2013167 views13 comments
On a recent, very hot, sunny day the butterflies were swarming all over my coneflowers. I was able to catch a shot with 2 Tiger Swallowtails sharing one coneflower. The background is shade from a Weeping Cherry tree and you can see some of the leaves from that tree at the top.

Canon 60D. 180mm macro lens. F/4.5 for 1/1000 sec. ISO 200. Tripod mounted (I have my ball head loosened so it somewhat functions as a Gimbal head), natural lighting.

Wonderful image, Carolyn! Excellent comp, detail and bg. Beautiful colors. I like how the leaves coming down from the top frame the upper butterfly.

Sweet catch, Carolyn! The BFs are in good separate positions and mostly in focus. The BG, with the overhead leaves guiding the eye to the subjects is good. An excellent image. :toast:

How pretty is this, Carolyn? The two swallowtails look like they are straight from a children's fairy tail. The light is perfect and the bg outstanding, including the leaves up top. Just superb. :toast:

Excellent color, sharpness, composition. The vertical crop works well as does the varying BG color, not to mention the perch which could be an image by itself.

You've got great colors in the two fresh swallowtails and the shady blue & green background sets them off wonderfully. The dof is very fine also...amazingly deep for f/4.5 & 180mm. Very well done. We're having a major Tiger Swallowtail outbreak here as well. I counted 20 in my yard yesterday, mostly on some late blooming Butterfly milkweed and a few on the Rose of Sharon.

An absolutely beautiful image, Carolyn! To only have such gorgeous butterflies in your garden. We are having a very bad BF year, in the Netherlands. :frown: I have to go a butterfly garden I think... :toast:
