Crown Prince

I was probably a little closer to this young bull than I should have been, but since he was slowly approaching me I thought it would be ok as he didn't appear stressed or concerned in any way. When another photographer later arrived on scene, the elk looked up from his grazing and provided me with the opportunity for this shot.

Comments, suggestions and critique always welcome.

Tech stuff: Canon 5D2, 24-105mm f4L @ 85mm, f/9, 1/125, ISO-400, manual exposure, hand held.

An excellent shot. Get a longer lens for the next time.

85mm, right -on, but I guess that is a bit close. Nice composition and exposure. Seems like it was an overcast day? Not sure if it can be punched up a tad. He is going to have a very impressive rack by fall, and be less willing to tolerate an 85mm!

Very good pose of a fine bull Rick. You left enough room around the bull to give a sense of the habitat.

I like the inclusion of the habitat and of course the 85mm really helped with that. That is a bit close, but I wouldn't worry as much about that until a few months from now. I certainly wouldn't want to get that close during rut. Had that happen on accident once as I was on a trail coming over a hill and got charged...it wasn't fun.

It is not often that one fills the frame with elk with 85 mm. Lovely colors and face on pose.

He's a Beauty Rick  Very nice close-up pose, with a great view of his habitat. You probably don't want to get this close in the fall though, he'll probably be a lot less predictable.
