Devastation Trail, Volcano National Park, Hawaii

This is another old image taken back in June 1985. I am planning a trip back to the Big Island in January so I though I would go back and scan some from my first trip there. I am sure it will be a very different adventure with all the volcanic activity. Many parts of the park are no longer accessible. This particular trail now gets closed frequently when the sulfur dioxide levels become too high due to all the volcanic activity at Halema'uma'u Crater.

Thanks for having a look.

Eva,

Even without your title or location, my immediate thought was "boneyard." I think the same meaning as your title. A terrific nature story. I like the hint of light on the far hill and that all the snags are reaching up to the empty sky (and mostly filling it.)

The only thought I have on this one is a crop off the bottom to eliminate the long fallen branch. no biggie though. A nice one from the archives!

Nice mood, the starkness of the dead wood scattered through the bushes is eye-catching and interesting

Wow! Really cool shot, and different. The dreariness is bold even if the light is muted. Also cool to see this "snapshot" of a time so long ago. Thanks for sharing, Eva

Very moody scene here Eva. Like your title as it fits the scene nicely. Amazing how stuff regrows in these areas. Nicely done.

Eva, this one has a really eerie look and feel to it. Lon's "boneyard" description is pretty much right on. The exposure latitude looks darn good from the E-64 too with no filter usage.

Eva, A very cool image. It certainly does make you think of a boneyard as Lon mentioned. I always enjoy it when you show some of your old images, Eva. You were doing nice work even back then. I sure went through a lot of rolls of E64.

You've been doing this kind of thing well for a long time, Eva. I like the mood the most, but everything else works in this, too. Great detail from that medium format.

I like the bone yard look, but it looks like it has a serious color cast to my eye, making it appear to me flat. Heavily blue/cyan?

Thanks all.

Hi Harley - I looked at the original file again and you are correct, there is a cyan/blue cast. Cut back on both in this repost. Thanks for that.
