Hummer

One from this morning in my backyard.
Female Black Chinned hummingbird, feeding on a Red Yucca plant. This is a common plant in the high dessert and one that the hummingbirds like to feed on. Decided to set up for a vertical composition. I certainly shoot a lot more of these in a horizontal format, but liked the overall flow as a vertical.

Canon 5D Mark III
100-400 @ 400mm
ISO 320
1/200 @ f/16

4-430 EXII Flashes on manual power @ 1/16

Larger version provided - Really need to see the larger version so see the details in the hummer and the eye.

Small crop from the top and bottom, cloned out one extra catchlight.

Wonderful comp, bg, flower, and a nice flight pose make for a very pleasant image. Your larger version shows wonderful details in the flower, as well as the hummer. Excellent! Sharon

This one came out great and I like your choice of the vertical composition-it works well with the opposing angles of the bird and plant. I like the contrasting colors of the background and plant and the fine detail in the bird. :toast:

The BG sets off both the hummer and the flower very well. Great detail. The larger image does show detail very well. Thanks for sharing.

Keith, this is a very pleasing shot, the repetition of the opposing diagonals adds a real strength to this image - the relationship of the hummer's body to its wings, the plant's blossoms to the stem, the relationship of the bird to the plant and even the subtle diagonals in the texture of the BG all work together to form a very pleasing pattern. On top of that the colors are gorgeous -excellent shot. :toast: :toast:
