Slide Fall Logs - Repost

I shot this last fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The previous year these logs were at the top. Strong flow from a storm obviously washed them down.

Tripod in the creek with me perched on rocks. 5D, 17-40L, f22, CPL (I think),3 exposure blend. I cropped out a bit of the bottom. Just more of the logs, rocks, and leaves.

All C&C welcome.

You've done a wonderful job with the technical aspects here. The water is captured with a great shutter speed, and you also handled the sky exposure very well. It's definitely a beautiful scene, but I do feel like something is missing, and I'm puzzled what it might be. Perhaps it's because my mind wants to see what's over the top of the waterfall, and for whatever reason, the large rock face begins to feel like a barrier rather than a visual element. Now that I look at it even closer, there is a bright blue arrow at the top of the falls pointing off into the distance. Maybe that's the visual signal that makes me want to see what's on the other side.

Ben,

I see what you mean about wanting to look over the hill instead of settling on the fall. I experimented with different crops. I think cropping off the bottom had something to do with it. Since this was shot as 17mm, it seems to shift perspective oddly by cropping off the bottom. For the re-post, I cropped some off the top and brought the bottom back in. I think it brings the perspective back down. I'm interested in what others think too.

Brad,

I like this and find it somewhat unique and refreshing as far as waterfall/cascades go. Most might bypass an image with the fallen logs, but I think you did well to embrace them and incorporate in to your comp. Excellent job with the exposure and processing; far too often the sky above in scenes like this get blown out. I didn't even see the "arrow" until reading Ben's comments. I do think the repost works better overall in pulling the perspective downwards a bit even letting the logs become more of the story here.

No real nits or suggestions. This works very nicely.

I like what you've done with the repost Brad. It definitely helps ground the shot better, and I also like how more of a triangular shape is revealed by the logs on the bottom.
