Collie Morning

With a group of people from my camera club went to Collie, south of Western Australia for WA Day long weekend. It was very cold in the morning (well very cold for WA unlike Canada or USA). Second morning we went to Wellington Dam and when we arrived there it was still very dark. All the the people in the group went down the dam except couple of us stay on the hill to take picture from different angle. After few shots from there we decided to go down and join the group, The car park was an old quarry with beautiful trees surrounded with great granite walls. Well, yes I missed the dam shots, but I got some shots like this which I like more.
I would like to know your honest opinion and if there is some thing I can do to improve it.
I cropped this one 4X5 and I had one 1x1, I think this one looks better.

Canon 5D III, 24-105mm @ 58mm, ISO 100, f/11, 0.4 Sec.

Mohammad,

Great and interesting find. A quarry you say? So that means the wall has been mined or carved? Almost want to think this should be M&N, but the wall looks natural enough.

I like this, but have some suggestions. I think the contrast is pretty heavy and there's little detail in the tree trunk. Also, I'm wishing for just a bit more room around the tree, which I think would make for a better, less cramped composition. But you may have had some constraints in how much you could include.

This has excellent potential, an appealing subject.

I like how the 'top' light illuminates the tree leaves against the darker granite walls, they pop out at ya.
That is, the contrast to BG can be considered a good thing in this case.
Simple & effective comp, perhaps a bit more room horizontally if you have it.
Also a good image for the man & nature gallery as Lon says..
Well done Mohammad :toast:

Mohammad,

Looks a bit over-saturated/contrasty like Lon mentioned. Walking closer and shooting at a wider angle would add separation between the tree and rock face and add depth to the frame.

Hi Lon, Howard and Brad,
Thanks for your great and constructive comments.
I think, I should have put this in M&N. Next image will go there.
This image was cropped a bit from the bottom. There were other trees on either side of this yellow one, that's why I could not have more room around it.
Lon, Thanks again with your comments. Contrast is very heavy.
The tree was too close to the wall, however I have other one will post today in M&N with a sider lens at 45mm

I would like to ask your comments on the other image "Collie Morning #2" in M&N gallery.
I appreciate your comment on this image and the one in M&N.
