Yearling Bull

I was plenty surprised to find this yearling in the company of a full grown bull. They clearly were feeding together as they moved up the hillside and past my position. The yearling even went over and carefully nuzzled the bull, who in turn seemed not to mind. Not seen anything like that before, I'd be curious if anyone else has seen bulls something like this.

Can't comment on the interrelationship issues with the moose, just likes to hang out with dad?
He's still at the cute stage but softer light might be more flattering, although you have a nice turn of the head and a catchlight. He seems pretty focused on something, another photographer perhaps?

Hey Brad, I like the pose this youngster is giving you and the tight crop works well for me. I find the branch at his feet just a little distracting, and as Gary mentioned the bright sunlight is perhaps a little harsh. But sometimes we just have to work with what we’re given and in this case I think you still pulled off a pretty good shot.

Sounds like that was a great sighting Brad. Your subject is quite cute andyou have a nice catch light in the eye, which are the appealing factors of the image. The light is a little harsh as noted and the environment a little on the busy side. Why ISO 1000?

Brad, it was years ago, but I saw something like this on Isle Royale NP. A young moose kept hanging around a mud lick which was visited by moose through out the day. It kept trying to pair up with other moose as they came to the lick. This was in May, and the behavior was attributed to the young moose being chased away by its mother, and was trying to pair up with any moose who would let it. It vocalized much of the time, a very sad moaning sound. Like your photo, but wonder how it would look as a tight crop on just the head and neck. You did well with the exposure, as it has been my experience that moose just suck up light. Thanks for sharing.

Vincent,
I was shooting ISO 1000 due to the monopod and that the moose was moving in and out of the shade, I just was not with it enough to adjust the ISO when he moved into the sun. Thanks for the feedback. Brad
