Jaroso Fire

The extreme/exceptional drought in New Mexico is stealing from us some of the most beautiful country in the state. This is the 4th major fire in as many weeks. Started by a lightning strike in thick forest with heavy fuels. It is currently not being fought because it is in very rugged terrain in a wilderness with no access. Extreme fire behavior and smoke rising to well above 20,000ft are prohibiting air attacks. It's not safe for ground crews. This area is easily National Park quality in terms of sheer beauty and biodiversity. Remote and unspoiled. Now burning at an alarming rate and there's nothing we can do about it. :frown:

It's really to bad this is happening, but maybe in the longer term everything will turn out OK.
Nice photograph in any case.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere recently that this area last burned in the late 1800s.

This image drives home the power of these fires. And it's not only the vegetation that gets destroyed: people's homes and livelihoods, wildlife, etc. I remember the Yellowstone fires and fires in the National Parks in Canada. Some vegetation comes back very quickly as part of the renewal process, but there will be a scar left for a long time.
