Rhino Dusk

by Morkel Erasmus

Gallery: WildlifePosted June 11, 2013161 views10 comments
The sun sets over a Black Rhino - now one of the most endangered and "in danger" mammals in Africa. Over 320 rhinos have been slaughtered in 2013 alone for their horns.

Location undisclosed. Taken after the sun had already set.
Double processed - once for sky and once for foreground/rhino

Techs:
Nikon D800
Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VR-II
f2.8 | 1/60 SS | ISO-4000

Beautiful light reflections from skin and horn Morkel.
An overall nice color palette captured here with the sky, ground and animal in the same red/purple/brownish tone.

Lovely light and colours Morkel, I particularly like the the reflected light on th ehorn and along the rhino's left hand side.
The large version does show that it was shot at ISO4000 but doesn't detract from a fine shot of a wonderful animal.

Hey Morkel,

Striking shot - nicely done. Colour palette is very eye-catching and both the lighting on the horn and subtle rim-lighting on the subject add a lot of visual appeal for me. Positioning of the subject works for me too. While I'm becoming less and less enamoured by images that are obviously cropped to "fit" the subject, I am wondering if a slight crop off the top here (largely to break the 50:50 land vs. sky split) might work? Just a thought. But image quite striking as presented.

So selfish of you to withhold the location. Kidding - and its definitely the right thing to do (and sadly I'm finding I have to do the same thing more and more myself over on my side of the pond). Disgusting about the poaching. Any key groups and/or organizations doing a good job of fighting the poaching (and thus worthy of the support of concerned individuals)? Any place you can point us to for more info on the problem?

Cheers...

Brad

I like the light on the Rhino Morkel as well as its bold body pose. Personally I would crop a bit tighter all around, to maybe 80% of the frame.

Beautiful light and subject. I too would like to compare this image a a little closer crop to see the difference.

Great image. I have to agree with the comments already made. There is something menacing about this lone Rhino looking right into the camera with his leg lifted like he is going to charge.

Thanks for your encouraging comments, folks. The situation is dire, and I'm afraid it will only stop when the last rhino falls dead, at least the way it's been escalating for the last 4 years.

You can go to the following sites for more info:

Here's a crop - is this what you have in mind, Vincent?
I've got various frames of this fella, will post some more later when I've processed them (some taken at longer focal lengths)

Hey Morkel :toast: I like the original post over the repost but agree with the comments about maybe tacking a slice off the top. Is this your first black rhino image? I like the posturing this fella is performing and the light is sublime.

Congrats buddy and enjoy you weekend. I guess Mana 2013 is coming up?

I can't stand the fact this animal keeps being slaughtered..despite all the work that has gone into educating people and protecting them.
As far as the shot...lovely color, like the pose, the look back at you, etc. Really nice work. Hope this species survives.
